The Depot: the Newcastle Lifestyle Restaurant
Newcastle, Australia has undergone immense transformation in the last 10 years. Once firmly known as a humble blue-collar steel city, Newcastle has become a vibrant place to live and visit. Striking a unique balance between inner-city living and a relaxed beachside town, Newcastle has become a thriving place in the past decade.
The Depot Restaurants Newcastle has become the ultimate Newcastle Lifestyle destination. Evolving with the culture of a growing city The Depot offers a full range of experiences, whether it’s a healthy lunch after a gym session, a romantic date for two, a fully catered function or a fantastic live music experience, The Depot is the place to be.
Chad Taylor gave life to The Depot on Darby Street in 2009. Set amongst a vibrant strip of cafes, restaurants and fashion retailers, Darby Street was the obvious choice for a restaurant of their own. Born and bred in Newcastle the pair spent most nights dining along the strip and immersing themselves in the Newcastle dining culture, something that proved only beneficial when opening a restaurant of his very own. By transforming what once was a Thai restaurant and a neighbouring florist, the adjoining wall was knocked down opening the space up to how it’s known today.
With a strong background in hospitality, Chad knew exactly what it would take to make The Depot restaurants Newcastle a success. After being in charge of operations for various hotels and restaurants including overseeing more than 300 staff from the age of 19, Chad had the benefit of experience beyond his years on his side.
In 2011 the opportunity arose for The Depot to expand to a second location. With the success of The Depot on Darby Street, there was a demand for larger groups, events and parties to be able to enjoy The Depot experience. The Depot of Beaumont Street in Hamilton opened its doors after a $1.5 million renovation. Located one another busy dining street within Newcastle allowed The Depot on Beaumont to shine amongst a vibrant strip. Once again, Chad and his team were heavily involved in the construction of their second restaurant, transforming the run down space that is over 100 years old.
From the beginning the goal was never to sacrifice quality for quantity, so creating function platters and large share plates was done with as much quality produce, care and attention to detail as the restaurant dishes at The Depot – and it was a roaring success!
The Depot on Beaumont Street remains one of the most unique and exciting locations for events in Newcastle. With five separate areas set across three levels, there really is nothing quite like it. Complete with a restaurant space that can seat up to 180 people, a back lounge area as well as an impressive mezzanine level and a sky-high lounge. The Depot on Beaumont offers a dynamic experience from simple dining to outstanding functions and events in Newcastle, including engagement and hens parties, New Years celebrations, corporate functions and many more. Another unique feat of the Depot on Beaumont is its capacity to be a to be an impressive and unique live music venue in Newcastle. Housing impressive acts such as Pete Murray, Thirsty Merc, Jon Stevens, Tim Rogers, Sandi Thom, Daryl Braithwaite and plenty more, there’s always an exciting event coming up at The Depot.
It’s remained a philosophy at The Depot restaurants Newcastle that quality is never sacrificed for price, ever. By hand selecting their produce each week in Sydney, Chad and his team have been able to maintain the highest standards across the menu. The Depot also owns a farm situated in Taro, NSW where much of the fresh produce found on the menu is grown and hand picked. This has allowed for their menu to feature unique produce that simply can’t be found anywhere else. Additional to this is an impressive garden situated behind The Depot on Beaumont Street, allowing the chefs to pick produce and plate it up when it’s as fresh as possible.
Most importantly, from their years of experience Chad and his team know that a restaurant is nothing without good service. By training the staff to be the best they can be they ensure that every link the chain is running at 100 per cent. Creating a positive team environment in both back and front of house has created an environment where staff members are enthusiastic, accommodating and always willing to make your Depot experience the best lifestyle experience in Newcastle.
